Is My Child Old Enough for a Camera? | Redondo Beach, CA | Self Image Photography
If you’re a mom or dad of a photo enthusiast, you might be wondering at what point do you stop letting your kid take pictures with your phone and get them a camera? And is my kid old enough for a camera?
My answer is that it’s never too early to encourage our kids to try new hobbies and fields of interest. But, there is definitely a “best age” for when to actually get your kids a camera.
First, it depends on what kind of camera you’re referring to. The “fancy” cameras, also known as DSLR cameras are the ones that have separate lenses and can cost around $400-600. That’s a pretty hefty investment for a kid. I believe a real camera like that is best in the hands of a kid 12 years of age or up. This age is able to understand and use their manual and be careful with special belongings.
What about for a younger child?
I find that an 8 year old is old enough to have their own point and shoot camera. Those are the kind of cameras that are small enough to fit into a small pocketbook. The caveat is that I think it should be connected with some kind of occasion or reward so that they can see that it’s not just another toy. Receiving and using a real camera isn’t funny business. It’s a “big kid” kind of tool and if they want to use it, they should learn how to use it and take care of it, too!
If your child is at least 8 years old and they’re interested in learning photography, you should check out my workshop for kids on learning how to be a photographer for kids ages 8-11.
